I enjoy writing for kids and today I thought I would share with you some of the organizations I am part of just in case you want to write too! I put in some great websites too : )
So, I am part of three organizations and there are also some FB groups as well. One of the organizations just made a free ebook titled Teacher to Teacher: Advice for Educators who want to write for Children. You can find my advice on page 22 : )
Here is my list of writing groups in order of my involvement and however they come to my mind.
Children's Book Writers of Los Angeles is a group near and dear to my heart since my friend founded it five years ago. It is a non-profit organization that helps educate and inspire writers and let's everyone know they have a voice. Although, we meet in the South Bay area of Los Angeles you are free to follow the facebook page and keep up with CBW-LA.org's official newspaper--Scribbler's Scoop (lots of good insights)!
Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) is an international non-profit organization that is also amazing and has been around for about 40 years! They have two conferences a year in Los Angeles and New York and they have satellite branches around the globe. There are a lot of things to learn and SCBWI can help the newbie to the more experienced. There are many FB pages for the various areas, but here is the main one Fans of SCBWI
Children's Book Insider has some great insights and a handy newsletter. They are currently giving away an ebook for Teachers interested in writing for children that gives inspiration and insights from over 75 teacher writers!
KidLit411.com has a great website with a wealth of information and they also have a Facebook group (although it is a closed group where you need to get permission to join).
KidLit.tv is a neat site that also has a closed Facebook group, but once you're in there are many things there. The website is helpful and has great videos!
Here are also some sites that are great to know about...
- Picturebookmonth.com has PiBoIdMo (Picture Book Idea Month--every November, 30 ideas for 30 picture books)
- 12x12challenge.com has you challenged to write a picture book each month!
- Inkygirl.com--Debbie reads, writes, and illustrates children's books and has a great site!
- Taralazar.com--Another great author blog with tons of information!
and best website for info on literary agents...
Wow, a lot of info is out there if you want to write for kids! Best of luck to all you teachers and teacher/writers out there!
